About The Danish Food Bank

The Danish Food Bank transforms the challenge of food waste into the opportunity of a meal. We reduce food waste and promote social equality by connecting the food industry with social organizations. This ensures that surplus food is turned into nutritious meals in meaningful communities, benefiting people in difficult life situations.

Our History

From Food Waste to Meals Since 2008

Since our founding in 2008, The Danish Food Bank has fought for a Denmark with less food waste and reduced social inequality. Together with the food industry and social organizations, we take shared responsibility to create a stronger and more sustainable food system.

For more than 15 years, we have ensured meals for people who, for shorter or longer periods of their lives, lack resources in their daily lives and need a helping hand and a nutritious meal.

Every day, all year round, The Danish Food Bank collects and distributes surplus food, which in 2024 amounted to 1,540 tons, transformed into 3.9 million meals. Behind this effort is a strong network of volunteers and employees, operating 20 refrigerated trucks across Denmark to ensure stable logistics, high-quality service, and food safety. We take pride in ensuring that the entire process – from collection and quality control to delivery and distribution – is carried out efficiently and with great respect for our partners.

The food we collect is surplus from the food industry that would otherwise go to waste, even though it is perfectly good. Meaningful food waste does not exist, and food produced for people should be consumed by people. This is why The Danish Food Bank leads the way in transforming food waste into social care through a nationwide effort that contributes to greater social, economic, and environmental sustainability and transition.

The Danish Food Bank reduces food waste and promotes social equality in collaboration with social organizations and nourishing food communities.

The Danish Food Bank connects the food industry with social organizations. Together, we take responsibility for reducing food waste in Denmark and ensuring that surplus food is allocated to meaningful food communities, where nutritious meals are prepared for people in challenging life situations.
